Site Council: Working Together to Create the Future of the School
The purpose of the School Site Council is to develop, review, and update the school
plans, and to act as an advisory group to the Principal/Superintendent & Board of
Trustees. The Site Council reviews and revises the School Plan, the School Safety
Plan, the LEA Plan, the Wellness Plan, and the Technology Plan. It also reviews the
Consolidated Application for Categorical Programs, student achievement data, and the
School Improvement Program. When special state funding is made available to schools,
like the School Site Block Grant, the council helps determine how those funds will be
used.
In 2009-10, the Site Council revised the school rules regarding student clothing, focused
on the Emergency response portion of the Safe School Plan, continued to work on the
assessment section of the Wellness Plan and the school website, conducted the Annual
Parent Survey and made plans to revise it, and acted as the GATE Advisory Committee.
In addition, the Site Council actively worked toward getting more accurate results on the
Census.
In 2011-12, the Site Council is finalizing revisions to the Safe School Plan, working with the
Board on the search to replace the retiring Principal/Superintendent in 2011-12, and looking
at practices which help students reach their highest potential and support their love of learning,
while reducing stress.
Recently, in the 2012-13 school year, the Site Council redefined its vision and updated the bylaws
to ensure the group was addressing state and federal mandates. Under Chairperson Laurie Smith,
the Council made great strides to support the school board of Pacific Elementary.
Each year, the School Site Council conducts a comprehensive parent survey to identify
concerns and monitor satisfaction. Survey results are carefully reviewed by the Site
Council, school staff, and the School Board, in order to make needed changes or improve
communication.
The Council is made up of an equal number of staff members and parents. New parent
members are selected by other parent members. Parents may be nominated or volunteer.
An election will be held only if there are more interested parents than seats. Regular
meetings are held from 3:15 to 4:45 pm on the second Monday of each month in the school library.
The year's schedule is decided at the first Site Council meeting.
